Australian Schools Rugby News : June 2010
asru new coaches 7 On the 16th May, following an initiative and invitation from the Australian Rugby Unions, High Performance Unit, a working meeting was held at ARU Headquarters. The agenda for this discussion and exchange of ideas was provided by Pat Langtry, the Coaching Director of Australian Schools rugby. Together with the ARU’s Ben Whittaker, Manu Sutherland and Andy Clark a blue-print for the coming season was developed. Also present at this meeting were the newly elected coaches Stephen Phillpotts (Brisbane Boys College, QLD), Jarred Hodges (Prairewood High School, NSW) and Tim Rapp (Matraville Sports High School, NSW). A background to each of these is shown right. While there was a framework presented at the meeting the three new coaches made suggestions for changes and alterations. The meeting became an intelligent discussion on plans for 2010, which involves campaigns against Fiji here in Australia and a tour to Samoa and New Zealand. Very briefly the meeting produced a ‘Blueprint’ for 2010 covering the following areas: n Calendar which involves a ‘national consistency’ of program across the talent centres for our selected players. n Developing a Coaching Plan which is consistent in both of our representative teams. This is inclusive of team culture and expectations. n Producing a plan so that all involved can receive information and reports on all players ‘in the mix’ and their regional training programs. n The selection process. n Linking the Schools program to the ARU program – the Under 20’s. n It also looked at a review of the 2010 at the end of the year. A very productive meeting. australian Schools preparation and performance meeting Stephen phillpottS Assistant Coach Australian Schools Steve was introduced to the game of rugby in Year 8 as a boarder at the Southport School, and whilst pursuing an all-round education was selected to tour the United Kingdom with the Australian Schoolboys side in his Senior year (1981). It was on the tour that a real passion for the game developed along with a ‘big picture’ of the friends and places the game could enhance your life with. He continued as a player representing Australia at Under 21 level and the Queensland ‘Reds’. Graduating as a Physical education teacher he continued his passion for the game as a player and coach before hanging up the boots meant more time to devote to coaching. Over the past 20 years Steve has coached at Brisbane Boys’ College (where he is Head of Physical education), the Queensland Schools Seconds and First Xv’s, and Premier Grade rugby in Brisbane (currently with the GPS club). He looks forward to the opportunity presented through coaching the Australian Schoolboys and mentoring the young men given the privilege of representing their country at this level.
