asru new coaches 8 JARReD hoDgeS head Coach Australia ‘A’ Schools JARReD is indigenous and has taught at Prairiewood High School for ten years. Prairiewood High is located in Sydney’s south western suburb of Wetherill Park, in what is well know as a soccer dominated area. In the ten years that the school has played rugby it has had both team and individual success. the highlight was being selected to represent Australia at the 2009 SANIX World Youth Rugby tournament held in Japan, where the school finished a creditable 8th place. On Jarred’s arrival at the school in late 1999, Prairiewood HS only had two soccer fields. Since that time one of the soccer fields was replaced for a rugby field, and now rugby is the most popular boys sport at the school. Rugby is considered as a boys educational strategy within the school community. Jarred played first grade in the Sydney Premiership for Parramatta and has been coaching for over ten years. He has been involved at all levels of rugby, coaching at schoolboy level (Sydney South West – CHS) and Senior grade (1st grade Penrith 2007–2009 and West Harbour 2010). He been involved in the ARU Junior Gold Squad program, as well as being appointed as a National talent Scout. Jarred has been National Coaching Director for the Lloyd mcDermott (National Indigenous) Rugby Development team. In this role he has acted as the head coach of the U16 (five time Div 2 National Champions) and U18 teams. Currently he is also assistant coach of West Harbour 1st Grade team in the Sydney Premiership. Stephen phillpottS Assistant Coach Australian Schools Steve was introduced to the game of rugby in Year 8 as a boarder at the Southport School, and whilst pursuing an all-round education was selected to tour the United Kingdom with the Australian Schoolboys side in his Senior year (1981). It was on the tour that a real passion for the game developed along with a ‘big picture’ of the friends and places the game could enhance your life with. He continued as a player representing Australia at Under 21 level and the Queensland ‘Reds’. Graduating as a Physical education teacher he continued his passion for the game as a player and coach before hanging up the boots meant more time to devote to coaching. Over the past 20 years Steve has coached at Brisbane Boys’ College (where he is Head of Physical education), the Queensland Schools Seconds and First Xv’s, and Premier Grade rugby in Brisbane (currently with the GPS club). He looks forward to the opportunity presented through coaching the Australian Schoolboys and mentoring the young men given the privilege of representing their country at this level.
