Australian Schools Rugby News : October 2010
2010 asru championships 9 810 awards 2010 The 2010 ASru championship program was an historic one on several levels. After dominating the division II Championships the last several years, Victoria and Western Australia were invited to compete at the Novotel division I Championships at Ballymore. As a result, both States assembled for the first time 2nd XV teams to compete in Geelong for division II. If this was not enough, due to the late withdrawal of Tasmania, Victoria assembled a President’s XV to take their place. There was some uncertainty prior to arrival in Geelong. It soon became apparent however that the quality of the rugby being played had not been affected too much. more importantly, the smaller rugby States were far more competitive and the results of the early matches indicated a very open championship. The lloyd mcdermott Indigenous XV defeated the Victorian Presidents XV in a hard fought final. After the first games in Brisbane both Victoria and Western Australia conceded they need to adjust to the speed and intensity of the major rugby States. To their credit, both teams showed significant development and reduced their score lines to more respectable results. They will be the sleeping giants of schools rugby over the next few years. For only the second time the final comprised of Queensland II and New South Wales II, after both defeated their opposite 1st XV sides in the final pool matches. Queensland II claimed the jika Travers Shield. The success of the Championships is in no small part due to the support of the Aru was once again outstanding with HPu staff and referees. In particular Warren robilliard, Anthony eddy and Ben Whittaker must be thanked for all their work. The Qru and in particular mark melrose worked tirelessly to ensure the success of the Novotel Championships in Brisbane.
