Australian Schools Rugby News : May 2011
state reports – the year ahead 9 VICTORIA At LASt the Victorian rugby fraternity can say it is the 15th team in a new expanded Super Rugby competition. the VSRU stands with our other Victorian rugby supporters in advocating that we will drive forward with development to help promote the Rebels franchise for Victoria. the Rebels organisation is working closely with the rugby community of Victoria to enhance the programs of the VRU and VSRU. the Rebels have linked themselves to many facets of Victorian rugby by assisting with clinics and training programs, lending their expertise and providing meaningful support. At the youth level the centre of excellence is expanding and the boys are offered a significant pathway to representative rugby. the Rebels ambassador program places players with every school and they are already visiting their allocated school and immersing themselves with them. the Rebels appeared at pre season clinics and camps and parent information nights. the VSRU has entered an arrangement with the University of Melbourne and the Rebels who have an education partner agreement to provide scholarships and bursaries to rugby players who wish to pursue their studies. Further to this the very existence of a Super Rugby team in Melbourne is doing wonders for the population’s general awareness of the game of rugby. the VSRU will have 65 teams in 2011 where the largest school is St Kevin’s college with eight teams and some emerging schools have one team. the teams will be playing in 8 playing divisions/ age groups with a total population we believe to be approximately 1450 players. Schools such as second tier Marcellin college (5 teams) and St Francis Xavier college (1 team) show that with support and a dedicated group of staff and parents the game can flourish in a school. the Australian championships will again see Victorian teams in both divisions. Victoria is very keen to field its team in the division ii championships as it gives vital exposure to a further 23 players at representative level. the 2011 championships will be held in Brisbane for the division i and the division ii will move from being a residential tournament at Geelong to be a fully billeted event in Melbourne. the host venue is Box Hill RUFc with some events being held nearby in Hays international college. the Melbourne schools have all answered the call for billets and have offered all the required beds for the event. the VSRU working closely with the VRU, the Rebels and Box Hill RUFc stand ready to assist the ASRU conduct the championships. the U16 and U14 teams will travel to Hobart for the annual weekend tournament in August. the inbound visits for matches in July and August VICToRIAN SChooLS’ RUGBY UNIoN Patron: Mr Bob Dalziel President: Mr Stephen Meek Hon Sec/chair: Mr Kevin Culliver Hon treasurer: vacant executive: Mr Peter Lewis (leave 2011), Mr Brian hendry, Mr Stephen Russell, Mr Robert Shields, Mr Simon haigh, Mr Simon Strachan VICTORIAN OFFICIALS 2011 VICTORIA I VICTORIA II Manager: Ema Yandall Manager: Natalie Coward Coach: Cliff Villiamu Coach: Greg Coward Assistant Coaches: Assistant Coaches: Simon Strachan AJ Masefau John Eden John Eden Physiotherapist: Physiotherapist: Andrew Anstee Leki Sisifa ASRN_no8_may_11.indd 10 13/5/11 9:15:09 AM
