Australian Schools Rugby News : August 2012
12 The Australia side had an indifferent start. Once they found their rhythm and, the cohesion between forwards and backs developed, the side ran in 3 unanswered tries in the first half. These scores were complemented by 2 conversions and a penalty goal to Sam Green. At half time, coaches Wallace and hodges emptied the bench. While this afforded and opportunity for eight players to experience international game time, it did compromise the team dynamics that developed in the first stanza. Basically the team had to start again! Unfortunately, some poor decision making at crucial times, meant that some promising opportunities were squandered. Despite this, Australia A showed commitment and endeavour against a Tongan side that in the second half played with verve, vigour and Polynesian flair. This was rewarded with an enterprising touchdown to the Tongan side. Late in the second half the Australia team recaptured the initiative and dominance and ran in a late try after a barnstorming run to replacement prop, Dylan Sikimeti. Sikimeti’s try was converted by Sam Green. At the end of the match, both teams joined together to celebrate the game and the international spirit of Rugby camaraderie. Captain Jack Tuttle was nominated as the team’s best player during the match. The match saw a number of players push their names forward for selection in the Australian Schools touring team to Fiji and New Zealand in late September and early October. After a promising start, with a score line that could of promised anything, the Australia A team lost their way somewhat, to only record a 29-5 win, despite holding a 22-0 half time lead. The Test was an entertaining affair with both sides prepared to chance their arms in attack and, demonstrating brutality and physicality in defence. Before the match the crowd witnessed the traditional Tongan prayer, and the Australian team were challenged by the Tongan form of the haka the Sipi Tau.
