Australian Schools Rugby News : June 2010
Alot has happened in Australian Schools Rugby since our last publication. For many the rugby season is well underway. More importantly a lot is happening with regional representative rugby. This of course leads to state teams being selected for the National Championships. When you read this edition three very active organisations will have completed their own carnivals: • NSW Combined High Schools • NSW Catholic Colleges • Queensland Secondary Sports All these organisations cover massive geographical regions and staging an annual carnival is a mammoth organisational feat. For many of the boys attending it involves their families funding considerable levies. For many this is hard – but for many it is their first taste of representative rugby. By the end of the season there will be talent from these organisations capable of selection for the Australian Schools teams to play Fiji, Samoa and New Zealand. Important State selection trials in NSW and Queensland will follow. ACT has already selected their squad. However sadly there will NOT be a Tasmanian team selected this year! This news is indeed sad and is a consequence of a number of situations: • The loss of Development Officers in that state • The problem with volunteers getting time off work to prepare and coach a team • The reduction of numbers. It is highly likely Tasmania will be represented with at least one keen and enthusiastic student. A boy named Rhys. It is hoped his enthusiasm can be rewarded and he can play as an invitational player with another state. The final amended draws for the Australian Championships are published in this edition. We also feature the tour to Japan by The Hills Sports High School. A very successful on- field and off-field experience by these boys. I hope you enjoy this edition and I welcome your feed-back.
